Water Changes

Frequency of water changes

Changing of water is very important to ensure the health of livestock. We would recommend a 25% water change every 1-2 weeks, which is why we recommend a service visit at least twice a month.

Water changes on marine systems are smaller but more frequent, such as 10% weekly as protein skimmers remove a lot of pollutants from the water.

Water type

Water changes on marine systems involve the correct addition of salt, pure water (Reverse osmosis or deionised) is usually used in marine systems as it is better quality than tap water, invertebrates will not do well in tap water and so reverse osmosis water must be used in reef systems. Reverse osmosis water can be used in fresh water systems where the fish are particularly sensitive or the fish need soft or acidic water.
