The Appeal

Marine systems are preferred by most people because of the diversity of marine life available in aquarium shops and the bright colours, nothing is more spectacular than a well maintained reef system. However a lot more is involved in looking after marine fish.

Maintenance

Salinity - the salt content of the water must be kept stable and regularly tested.

Protein Skimmer - needs regular cleaning and adjusting

Lighting - the lights are most important where corals are being kept, the intensity must be high for most corals.

Additives - Supplements can be added to the water as corals can use up certain elements in the water as they grow, some corals also need feeding with liquid feeds.

Calcium Reactors - need adjusting to meet the needs of the coral and C02 bottles will need changing or filling up periodically.

Sumps - need topping up or auto top up equipment needs cleaning

Kalkwasser Reactors - may need filling with calcium hydroxide and adjusting.

Phosphate reactors - periodically need changing.

Not all of the above equipment is necessary in all marine set ups and there are also other aspects of marine maintenance.
